SUMMARY: The position of athletic trainer is to provide injury prevention, care, and rehabilitation for student

athletes and assist the Director of Athletics in the implementation of a comprehensive athletic training

instruction program for District athletics coaches. This position also provides First Aid, CPR and AED instruction

and is responsible for coordinating a student athletic trainer program.

CONTEXT AND MISSION: Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of

Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Boulevard Park and White Center Heights in Washington State.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not

- Assist the Director of Athletics in the development and implementation of the Athletic Training Coaches

Education Program for District coaches.

- Assist the Director of Athletics in the coordination of a Student Athletic Trainer Program; identifies

eligibility requirements and appropriate athletic training activities for students participating in the

Program; provide instruction to student athletic trainers on First Aid techniques, protective taping,

wraps and dressings, and the use of therapeutic modalities; coordinates with District coaches on the

supervision of student athletic trainers.

- Assist Building Athletic Directors and District coaches to establish and implement an athletic training

program of injury prevention, conditioning, and emergency treatment procedures.

- Provide athletic trainer services, as scheduled by the Director of Athletics, to District schools and the

District stadium site, including post-season, holiday, and/or weekend events.

JOB DESCRIPTION: DISTRICT ATHLETIC TRAINER

- Practice prevention of athletic injuries through application of protective taping, wraps, and braces to

student athletes.

- Make recommendations to the Director of Athletics for safety improvements to athletics facilities and

equipment; assist District coaches with the evaluation, proper fit, and inventory of safety equipment.

- Assist Building Athletic Directors in the maintenance and distribution of Athletic Training kits to in-

season coaches.

- Evaluate athletics injuries and performs necessary First Aid; ensure proper preventative and safety

measures for the transport of injured athletes by appropriate conveyance.

- Make recommendations to parents regarding medical care related to student athlete injuries, illnesses,

or conditions.

- Maintain accurate, current, and complete records of accidents, injuries, and treatments involving

District athletes and athletes or spectators injured on District property.

- Provide follow up treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes, under the direction of the treating

physician, using approved treatment modalities such as whirlpools, guards, electrical stimulation,

braces, ultrasound, and splints.

- Ensure the efficient organization of training equipment and supplies, and the orderliness, security, and

cleanliness of assigned District training rooms.

- Prepare annual assessment of the District’s athletic training equipment and supplies; inventories

training equipment and supplies as directed; makes recommendations for upgrades to training room

equipment.

- Attend coaches’ and Building Athletic Director meetings as directed.

- Provide District and/or community event management supervision as directed.

- Perform other related duties as directed by the Director of Athletics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Education and Experience

B.A. degree in athletic training, education, or related field

Must possess and maintain National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) status, with

successful completion of each of the five practice domains

Must possess First Aid/CPR/AED certification

Must successfully complete and maintain certification as First Aid/CPR/AED instructor within 60 days of

employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS::

Willing to complete WA State CTE certification and teach CTE sports medicine to students upon request if this

position is tied to a Sports Medicine Teacher position.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Criminal background clearance

Valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Athletic training principles and practices regarding injury prevention, care, and rehabilitation

First Aid, CPR and AED methods

Work with high school and middle school age students and supervise the activities of student athletic trainers

Evaluate injuries, apply appropriate treatments, and understand possible adverse effects which can occur

Work under the direction of physicians to provide medically appropriate care and rehabilitation of injuries

Operate athletic training and treatment equipment such as whirlpools, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and

other therapeutic items

Maintain accurate records of accidents and injuries

Organize District training room facilities, equipment, and supplies

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

hazardous or infectious agents. Employee may be required to work on weekends and/or holidays.
