Additional Information: This position is Pre-K Play and Learn Program. Hours will vary between
placements and facilitator availability, 7-14 hours per week, Monday -
Thursday, no Friday work.

SUMMARY: The Preschool Instructor works with pre-school children in the district’s PreK Play and Learn program.

Responsibilities include preparing program materials, integrating daily activities with curriculum, monitoring

children safety and well-being, and working with parents/caregivers to extend learning at home.

CONTEXT AND MISSION: Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of

Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Boulevard Park and White Center Heights in Washington State.

Starting in the fall of 2012, the Highline community came together to develop a four-year strategic plan outlining

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not

- Develops and implements classroom activities and curriculum in accordance with program standards and

Kindergarten Readiness guidelines.

- Designs, implements and evaluates lesson plans on a weekly basis.

- Organizes and coordinates classroom activities and programs, including field trips

- Assists with development of instructional leadership skills and abilities of teacher assistants and volunteers

through supervision and training

- Assists with the development, implementation and communication of district and site policies and

procedures related to the PreK Play and Learn Program

- Maintains close contact with families and caregivers

- Maintains working knowledge and skills in the area of early childhood education

- Actively participates in professional development opportunities offered through HPS and other agencies as

needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION: PRESCHOOL INSTRUCTOR (PreK Play and Learn Program)

- Evaluates the needs of individual children using a variety of means such as screening tools, checklists,

enrollment information, observations, parent interviews etc.

- Develops and implements programs based on individual children’s needs and developmental level.

Participates in regular staffing meeting and individual parent/child meeting and ensures students are making

progress.

- Maintains organized, accurate written records on individual children’s progress as required to assist students

with the successful transition to a regular kindergarten class room

- Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate Degree in the field of early childhood education or child development with a minimum of 30 quarter
units or equivalent semester hours in the field of early childhood education or child development
Two (2) years of related work experience with adults/teen-parents and young preschool children

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS::
Bilingual in Spanish/English or Somali/English or Vietnamese/English
Bachelor degree in the field of early childhood education
Valid Washington State Elementary Education Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Early Childhood

Education (Pre-K-Grade 3) or Special Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Washington State Driver’s License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by

an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will constantly bend neck and back, use hands for

repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling. The employee is frequently required to stand/walk, squat, kneel, use

hands for fine manipulation, and push/pull. The employee will occasionally be required to sit, climb

stairs/ladder, lift and reach overhead, crawl, knee stand, and lift/carry. The employee must constantly lift/carry

up to 10 pounds and must frequently lift /carry up to 20 pounds. The employee will occasionally lift/carry a

maximum of 50 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to push/pull a maximum weight of 10 pounds.

Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions for long periods of

time and regularly works near video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and

occasionally loud. Exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The employee must deal with angry and

upset students, parents, and community members. The employee must adjust to frequent interruptions in their

work schedule.
