Build relationships with students and do what you say you will do.

Focus on the situation, not the person, when addressing student behavior.

OUR TEACHING PRACTICES:

Teachers adapt lessons, content and instruction in response to student voice, cultural diversity and learning needs.

Instruction

We will reduce the achievement and opportunity gaps by using culturally responsive, inclusive, standards-based instruction.

WHAT HIGHLINE TEACHERS DO:

Ask “what is the big idea?” and assess to make sure students get it.
Plan meaningful assignments that ensure students master the standards.
Do what is necessary to meet a range of learning needs.
Utilize rubrics and goal-setting strategies to ensure students have an understanding of where they are and where they are headed.
Meet regularly with each student to discuss progress toward meeting each standard.
Provide regular feedback to students, and empower students to understand their own learning.

WHAT OUR TEACHERS COMMIT TO:

Utilize standards as the foundation for planning and instruction.
Discuss progress and set goals with individual students.
Use standards-based rubrics to measure student progress.

OUR TEACHING PRACTICES:

Teachers align high expectations, content, resources, assessments and instruction to Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Teachers use multiple assessments and innovative, data-driven instruction to engage and communicate with students about their progress toward standards mastery.

Relationships

We will know our students by name, strength and need and have open, two-way communication with students, families and community partners.

WHAT HIGHLINE TEACHERS DO:

Listen to families, and ensure families have the information they need.
Invite families to share perspectives of family culture.
Ask families what does/does not work for their child and shift instruction to be more relevant.

WHAT OUR TEACHERS COMMIT TO:

Consistent communication with families.
Always begin communication about student with something positive.
Share evidence of student progress with families several times a year.

OUR TEACHING PRACTICES:

Teachers connect effectively with families regularly, using a variety of communication methods to best meet families’ needs.
Teachers collaborate with families and students to create and monitor student growth.

Support

We will increase student success by supporting their social-emotional and academic needs.

Use student data to inform instruction.
Plan differentiated lessons that meet students’ needs.
Seek out and attend professional learning opportunities.
