SUMMARY: This position manages the operations of a summer school office. The position greets parents and

students, serves as secretary to the principal, supports the data tracking of student attendance and grades, and

provides various support services for students, parents, staff and the public.

CONTEXT AND MISSION: Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of

Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Boulevard Park and White Center in Washington State. Starting in

the fall of 2012, the Highline community came together to develop a four-year strategic plan outlining the

community’s bold goals and big dreams for its children. The plan’s promise is that every student in Highline Public

Schools is known by name, strength, and need, and graduates prepared for college, career, and citizenship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not

- Greet parents and students and answer basic questions about the program.

- Serve as secretary to the principal.

- Support the data tracking of student attendance and grades by ensuring teachers enter student attendance

and by entering grades data into the system.

- Keep organized records of student enrollment and courses, including accessing and entering data in student

information system.

- Provide various support services for students, parents, staff and the public in regards to summer school.


Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent

Five years of increasingly responsible secretarial experience, including records maintenance and bookkeeping

One year of experience in dealing with adolescents and the public in a warm, confident manner



Criminal background clearance


Highline School District practices

Advanced office practices

Office equipment including microcomputers and related software

General bookkeeping

Filing, record keeping, database management, report writing

School board policies and procedures


Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the general public

Interact with adolescents in a warm, confident manner

Manage an office, including operating basic office equipment

Set up and maintain data tracking systems in Microsoft Excel

Accurately enter and access student information into the student information system

Set up and maintain an accurate filing system

Attend to detail and follow tasks through to completion

Work effectively under pressure and be flexible

Work independently with minimal supervision

Work all summer school days

Maintain confidentiality

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee

frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The

employee is occasionally required to reach above and below their shoulders and bend/twist at the waist. The

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works
